$50 million facility will turn trash into energy at Manatee County’s landfill

MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — Each month, more than 41,000 tons of trash come into the Lena Road Landfill in Manatee County. As it breaks down, that trash creates a methane gas byproduct.

Manatee County is currently using about 25% of the captured methane gas to power a nearby wastewater treatment facility. The remaining 75% is flared, or burned off and wasted, but not for long.
