Manatee County Unveils Gateway South Shelter to Aid Women in Recovery from Addiction and Homelessness

Manatee County has opened the Gateway South Shelter to support women facing addiction, homelessness, and trauma. Funded through opioid settlement dollars, HUD’s HOME-ARP Program, and county contributions, the facility provides comprehensive recovery services. According to Manatee County Government, Gateway South is part of the Under One Roof initiative, offering a haven and streamlined access to critical services.

Housed in a renovated former Sheriff’s Office building, the shelter provides secure accommodations and supportive services, including case management and healthcare coordination. Manatee County District 2 Commissioner Amanda Ballard said, “This project reflects our shared commitment to meeting people where they are and providing real pathways to stability and hope,” emphasizing the facility’s role in strengthening the community.

Gateway South Women’s Shelter program manager Sarah Carter said, “This is more than the opening of a facility—it’s the beginning of a new chapter for the women we serve,” according to Manatee County Government.
