Villager tracked down at his home after merchandise scanning goes off track at Walmart

A resident of the Village of Hemingway was arrested after being tracked down at his home after an alleged theft at Walmart.

A loss prevention officer at Walmart at Sarasota Plaza reported that 73-year-old Michael Guidry had committed a theft on Jan. 24, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

He explained that after reviewing the store’s surveillance footage, he saw Guidry come into the store with a shopping cart that afternoon. He walked through several aisles, selecting various grocery and household items totaling $82.43. He then went to a self-checkout register, skip-scanned $8.86 worth of merchandise and put them in bags, the report said.

During the checkout process, Guidry’s payment transaction failed. A store clerk helped him twice, and he tried to leave twice before completing payment for the items that were scanned. He then left the area on a scooter or motorcycle, the report said…
