Panel: Homeless need housing, empathy

VENICE — There will never be a true end to homelessness because safety-net housing will always be needed, Salvation Army director Brenda Downing said. But a panel of experts had some ideas Tuesday about how to reduce it.

Downing, representatives of five other groups that work with the homeless and one person with the “lived experience” of having been homeless, spoke to the 60 or so people at the United Way of South Sarasota County’s quarterly Homeless2Home luncheon at the Plantation Golf & Country Club.
