Iconic downtown Sarasota building for sale as future remains unclear

A yellow and orange building that serves as an entrance to downtown — and as a significant piece of Sarasota history — recently hit the market for $8.5 million.

The Herald Square building in the Burns Court district has stood at the corner of South Pineapple Avenue and South Orange Avenue for 101 years. It’s been privately owned for the last 40, a move that saved the historic building from the threat of demolition.

Now, its future is uncertain. But Denise Kowal, the current owner of the building and the woman who’s spent the last four decades preserving it, is looking for a buyer who will continue the building’s century-long legacy…
