Beloved Sarasota restaurants, shops could be torn down for apartments

A set of colorful bungalows in downtown Sarasota, housing popular restaurants and shops, carry some of the city’s historic character and local business charm. The beloved, one-story buildings from the 1920s and ’30s face a daunting, expanding skyline that could swallow them up.

A five-story, multifamily residential building named 1899 Fruitville Road — at the intersection of Fruitville Road and Links Avenue, across from the Sprouts grocery store — faced the city’s Development Review Committee earlier this month but did not receive partial sign-off on its plans. The development team will have to return to the DRC at a later date.

Where is the site of the proposed apartment building in downtown Sarasota?

The proposed apartment building would hold 324 units, including 36 attainable housing units through the city’s attainable bonus density program, on nearly 3.5 acres between 4th Street, Gillespie Avenue, Fruitville Road and Osprey Avenue. The project will also include a six-level off-street parking structure integrated into the development, along with amenities including a gym, clubhouse and pool.
