Latino Leaders Fume As Mamdani Scraps Gracie Mansion Puerto Rican Reception

Mayor Zohran Mamdani abruptly canceled the city’s traditional pre-Puerto Rican Day reception at Gracie Mansion on Wednesday, sparking anger from Latino leaders who saw the move as a slight. Organizers say the plug was pulled just as they were finalizing parade weekend plans, and they immediately pressed City Hall for answers.

Alvaro Lopez, the Brooklyn borough director for the mayor’s Office of Mass Engagement, told organizers by email that the city would not host its long-running reception at Gracie Mansion this year, even though the Puerto Rican Heritage calendar had previously listed a reception there for June 11. “Ending the Gracie Mansion reception would be a ‘slap in the face,’” one Puerto Rican advocate told the paper, capturing the frustration of community groups that view the event as a symbolic nod to Puerto Rican contributions across the city. Organizers said they wanted a clear, detailed plan from City Hall, not just a vague promise to reschedule, the report added. The New York Post first reported the dispute.

The NYC Mayor’s Office documented an earlier Gracie Mansion reception tied to the parade.

Part Of A Pattern Of Pushback

Mamdani’s approach to events at Gracie Mansion has already drawn fire from other corners of the city. Two major Jewish organizations declined an invitation to a Shavuot gathering at the residence following controversy over a city video, and critics have questioned whether the administration’s outreach efforts are as inclusive as promised. JTA covered the earlier flap and the resulting boycott…
