NEW YORK, NY — Two men were killed and three others were badly hurt after a driver reportedly plowed into parked cars, crossed a curb and struck people sitting outside a barbershop in Manhattan on Friday evening.
Police were called to the area near West 109th Street and Amsterdam Avenue around 7 p.m., according to the NYPD. Officials said the crash is being investigated, and drivers were told to stay away from the block while the scene was secured.
What police say happened
Reports cited by local media said the driver may have been intoxicated before the crash. Police identified the driver in reports as 61-year-old Elvin Suarez of Morningside Heights.
Authorities said Suarez was taken into custody and later brought to a hospital, where his blood was tested for alcohol. He now faces multiple charges, including manslaughter, vehicular assault and driving while intoxicated, according to reports.
