A man disrupted Shabbat service at a New York City synagogue and allegedly attacked a member of the congregation, leaving her with injuries. He has since been charged with multiple hate crimes.
Officers with the New York City Police Department (NYPD) were called to Manhattan’s Central Synagogue just after 6 p.m. local time on Friday, Aug. 14, after a man — later identified as Larry Montes — “began acting irate and disrupted a service,” an NYPD spokesperson told PEOPLE.
As synagogue security escorted Montes, 46, out amid the service, which was being livestreamed, he allegedly struck a 63-year-old woman, according to a statement from NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch. The woman, a member of the congregation, suffered a “small laceration” and “pain to her lip and right forearm” as a result of the alleged attack, police said…
