Hundreds of New Yorkers boarded buses in Harlem in the early morning on Aug. 28 as voting rights advocates from New York and New Jersey traveled to Washington, D.C., for a rally focused on protecting access to the ballot.
Organizers said more than 50 buses from New York and New Jersey were expected to bring demonstrators to the Lincoln Memorial for the “March on Washington — Defend the Vote” rally. The gathering comes on the anniversary of the historic 1963 March on Washington, connecting today’s voting rights debate with one of the most significant moments in the modern civil rights movement, ABC News reported.
The original March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom drew an estimated 250,000 people to the National Mall on August 28, 1963.
