A community fundraiser organized by Temple Beth Sholom has raised more than $26,000 to help a longtime employee whose teenage son is undergoing treatment for leukemia.
Jose Canales has worked at Temple Beth Sholom in Roslyn Heights for 22 years as part of the synagogue’s maintenance and facilities staff. His 14-year-old son, Andy, was diagnosed with leukemia in 2024 and has been hospitalized more than 10 times over the past two years, according to the fundraiser.
Andy was admitted to an NYU Langone hospital in Manhattan in April and remained there for months while receiving treatment. He was recently moved to a rehabilitation facility in upstate New York, where he is continuing his recovery before returning to the hospital for additional treatment…
