Two-year-old Mia was all smiles for her first week of school — a big moment for the eager child, but also for New York City, as Mayor Zohran Mamdani launched the inaugural year of free 2-K for 2,000 children.
Wearing her school’s optional uniform and “ABC” bows in her hair, Mia excitedly entered the building, greeted multiple adults with “Good morning!” and hugs, and ran to the school bus balloon display for a photo opp.
“Can I see Mia?” the precocious toddler asked, wanting to approve the picture.
Her aunt, who dropped Mia off Thursday morning, said that when the family found out she had gotten one of the coveted 2-K slots — some 5,700 families applied — they were “so excited.” She said the rollout of the free early care and education program was a boon for the city at large — especially its toddlers…
