A 67-year-old East Harlem man has died nearly three weeks after a street fight outside the George Washington Carver Houses left him with severe head injuries. Edwin Jimenez was pronounced dead Friday at Mount Sinai Morningside, according to police, following a brawl with 52-year-old Jose Santiago that broke out around 9:45 p.m. on August 24 at East 102nd Street and Second Avenue.
The fight happened about a mile from where Jimenez lived, police said, and directly on the block that houses NYPD’s 23rd Precinct at 164 East 102nd Street, according to the NYPD. As first reported by the New York Daily News, Santiago was stabbed during the altercation, suffering wounds throughout his body, while Jimenez sustained the head trauma that ultimately proved fatal. Police have not identified what sparked the confrontation.
EMS rushed both men to Mount Sinai Morningside, a hospital located at 1111 Amsterdam Avenue on the West Side, according to Mount Sinai Health System. Jimenez arrived in critical condition and was in police custody at the time; Santiago was listed in stable condition. Police arrested both men following the clash, and the paper’s report notes Jimenez was charged with assault and criminal possession of a weapon, while Santiago was charged with assault.
