A New York high school student is challenging school administrators after being suspended for bringing a cup of coffee to class.
Julie Kaputa was returning to Beaver River Central School for her first day of senior year on September 3 when she got into trouble during her first lesson. “I walked in, I had my coffee with me. I got to my first period class and my teacher said, ‘I’m either going to need you to dump that out or consume it on the spot or go down to the office,'” Julie told WTVM.
Julie, who is an honors student, was handed an in-school suspention for violating the school’s outside food and drink rule. The rule is a new addition to the school’s code of conduct for this year, which seeks to “create a safe, instruction-focused environment for all students.”

However, Julie and her mother aruge that the code isn’t valid. They claim that the new policy was not adopted legally by the school as they allege that there was no public hearing on the matter.
“She said, ‘It says there’s supposed to be a public hearing. When was that? We never knew about it. Did they announce it?’ And I said, ‘I don’t know, look.’ And we couldn’t find one,” said MaryAnne Kaputa, Julie’s mother…
