Someone climbed to the rooftop landing of a building on Dumont Avenue in Brownsville, fired a gun multiple times, and then ran off on foot without being caught. No one was hurt, but the NYPD says the unidentified shooter remains wanted for reckless endangerment as of Saturday, more than three days after the gunfire sent an alert rippling through the neighborhood.
The shots were fired at 360 Dumont Avenue on September 16, according to Shore News Network, which reported that investigators are seeking public help identifying and locating the person responsible. The address is in Brownsville.
The incident involved the 73rd Precinct and Police Service Area 2, the report notes. PSA 2, headquartered at 560 Sutter Avenue, is the NYPD housing bureau command responsible for patrolling 42 NYCHA developments across Brooklyn’s 73rd, 75th and 77th Precincts, according to the NYPD. The report describes the address as involving both the local precinct and the dedicated housing unit.
A Corridor Already Flagged for Intervention
Dumont Avenue isn’t an anonymous stretch of pavement to city officials. It was named one of five target blocks in the 73rd Precinct under New York City’s “Every Block Counts” pilot program, alongside blocks on Bristol Street, Christopher Avenue, Lott Avenue and Mother Gaston Boulevard, an inter-agency effort that steers safety, sanitation and social resources toward blocks with a history of persistent violent crime, per the NYC Mayor’s Office.
