Tyrell Guthrie, who beat a man to death behind a Chuck E Cheese restaurant in Hempstead two years ago, was sentenced yesterday in a Mineola courtroom by Judge Howard Sturim to 18 years in prison followed by 5 years of post-release supervision.
Guthrie pleaded Guilty last November to 1st degree Manslaughter. He was represented by Garden City criminal defense lawyer David Haber.
A 364-day sentence for reduced Grand Larceny and Criminal Possession of Stolen Property charges is included in those 18 year. Besides his Manslaughter conviction, he was indicted on Felony charges in connection with a separate robbery incident two months earlier on February 10, 2022.
Guthrie owes DNA fees, “Mandatory Surcharges” and other fees on the two criminal cases totaling about $1000.
Guthrie’s 62-year-old co-defendant, Dennis H. Ray — “Midnight” to his friends — was arrested a few weeks later on May 7, 2022. Ray previously served two prison terms for Attempted Robbery and other Felonies. He pleaded Not Guilty on December 18, 2023, to his charges. Remanded since his original arraignment two years ago, Ray is scheduled to appear before Judge Sturim in Nassau Criminal Court in Mineola on February 8, 2024.
