NYPD officer punched in face in Times Square; LI man arrested

NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – A Long Island man was arrested after he pummeled an NYPD officer in the face in Times Square early Sunday morning, police said.

The officer was attacked as police responded to a call about a disorderly person at Broadway and West 42nd Street shortly after 12 a.m.

The man, identified as Michael Thomas, of Great Neck, punched the cop in the face multiple times before he was taken into custody, police said.

The 24-year-old faces charges of assault on a police officer, assault with intent to cause physical injury, disorderly conduct and harassment.

The cop suffered minor injuries and was taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue to be checked out.

The assault came just days after a mob attack on two NYPD officers outside a migrant shelter in Times Square made national news. The caught-on-video attack sparked outrage after several suspects were released without bail and reportedly fled to California.
