Democrat Suozzi Wins Special Election, Tightening House Majority Making Governance More Difficult

In a House of Represetatives that is already deadlocked and divided without a large majority the House governance by leadership just got harder as Democrats picked up another contested seat in last nights special election in New York.

The Independent on MSN is reporting that, Democrat Tom Suozzi has won a special election for the House seat that was left vacant when disgraced ex-lawmaker George Santos was expelled from Congress.

The Democrat, 61, was declared the winner just after 10pm in a resounding victory with a little over 50 per cent ballots counted, defying polls that had projected the race would go down to the wire.

With 84 per cent of votes counted, he was leading by 54 per cent to Ms Pilip’s 46 per cent.

The House Speaker, Mike Johnson’s margin for error in getting Republican priorities through the House is getting slimmer, complicating future votes and magnifying the ability of individual lawmakers to force concessions. This was most obvuious by the impeachment results that failed the first round and only won by one vote the second round yesterday by Republicans of Homeland Secretary Mayorkas by one vote. Representatives Mike Gallagher of Wisconsin and Tom McClintock of California were the other Republicans to vote against impeachment.
