29-year-old bystander stabbed to death after road rage dispute erupts in Morris Heights

A man is dead after he was stabbed in the chest near a daycare in the Bronx on Tuesday, in what police sources say stemmed from a road rage dispute.

The incident started around 4:30 p.m. at West Tremont Avenue and Phelan Place in Morris Heights, where two drivers got into a fender bender, but what should have been easily resolved, instead ended in bloodshed.

Police say one of the drivers, a woman, called her boyfriend to the scene. Witnesses told Eyewitness News reporter Lucy Yang that the boyfriend started throwing fists at the wrong group of men, eventually stabbing a bystander in the chest.

The bystander collapsed in front of a nearby day care center.

The victim, identified as 29 year old Ronald Gomez-Mesa, was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he later died.

Candles are now being left in his memory.

Police have been out all night trying to gather evidence and find the killer, but no arrests have been made so far.

The investigation is ongoing.
