NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A 16-year-old boy was arrested Thursday on murder and other charges in the fatal shooting of a mother who police said died protecting her husband and son during a robbery at their condo in Chinatown earlier this month.
The suspect, who was not named because of his age, was charged with second-degree murder and first-degree robbery, as well as three counts of first-degree burglary and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon.
He was arrested in connection with the killing of Ying Zhu Liu , 57, during a robbery at 44 Market St., a condo building steps from the Manhattan Bridge, around 11 p.m. on Sept. 9.
Liu suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was unresponsive by the time officers arrived, police said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to police, two males followed Liu’s 61-year-old husband into the building and up an elevator to an eighth-floor hallway. During the commotion, Liu went out to the hallway to intervene and was shot in front of her husband and 32-year-old son, who was pistol-whipped during the confrontation. The thieves then fled with the husband’s phone.
