MANHATTAN, N.Y. (PIX11) – A gun was found dumped in a trash can in Lower Manhattan Friday afternoon, according to the NYPD.
Around 3 p.m., police found the unloaded gun in a trash can on the Cortlandt Street subway station platform, police said. Someone called in to police saying they found the gun, according to the NYPD.

The gun was an assault rifle, according to the New York Post . PIX11 could not confirm the type of gun with the NYPD.
The city recently tested out new weapons scanners for subway stations , but the results fell short, according to advocates. The scanners created false positive results on over 4% of scans and did not turn up any guns, according to police data.
