Good Samaritan brought abandoned baby inside on cold Bronx morning

LONGWOOD, Bronx (PIX11) – A good Samaritan brought an abandoned days-old baby inside during a cold Sunday morning, he told PIX11 News.

The baby was found around 6:05 a.m. Sunday wrapped in blankets in a tote bag outside a residence on Rev. James A Polite Avenue, police said.

Mamadou Hafiz Jallow, who lives near where the baby was found, brought the baby inside for safety, he said.

“I didn’t want to mess up any evidence but it was too cold,” Hafiz Jallow . “I had to take the baby from outside, put it [inside].”

Now, the baby is in stable condition, and police are searching for the person they believe left her outside.

Under New York’s Abandoned Infant Protection Act, people can anonymously abandon a newborn baby up to 30 days old – but there are some stipulations. The baby must be left at a safe place, like a hospital or firehouse, and the parent has to notify someone of the baby’s location.
