NYPD Detectives Questioned in Crypto Kidnapping Case

Two NYPD detectives, one assigned to Mayor Eric Adams’ security detail, are under investigation for their alleged involvement in a cryptocurrency kidnapping and torture scheme. The detectives allegedly delivered the victim, a 28-year-old Italian cryptocurrency trader, into the hands of his tormentors.

The victim was held hostage for weeks while his captors attempted to extract his Bitcoin password. He was reportedly tortured with electric shocks, beaten with a firearm, and threatened with death. He eventually managed to escape.

Two suspects, John Woeltz and William Duplessie, have been charged in connection with the kidnapping and have pleaded not guilty. The detectives’ alleged involvement centers around their “off-duty employment” providing security for Woeltz, a crypto entrepreneur. One detective picked up the victim from JFK International Airport on May 6th.

Both officers have been placed on modified duty, meaning their badges and guns have been confiscated, and they are currently performing administrative tasks. The investigation is attempting to determine the extent of their knowledge and involvement in the plot. A second detective, from the Narcotics Division, has also been placed on modified duty in connection with the case.

Mayor Adams’ office stated the mayor had no knowledge of the officer’s off-duty activities and emphasized that all city employees are expected to follow the law. The NYPD has no record of either detective applying for or receiving approval for off-duty employment, raising further questions about their actions.

Both detectives were reportedly hired through a private security company operated by a retired NYPD sergeant. The investigation is ongoing.
