Invasive species of tick found in N.Y. discovered to be carrying dangerous bacterium in Conn.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — If you haven’t been applying bug spray on your trips to the park, now’s a good time to start.

An invasive species of tick, which can be found in New York—including on Staten Island—has recently been identified by scientists in another state as the carrier of a dangerous bacterium.

According to Patch, The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station has reported a confirmed case of an Asian longhorned tick carrying Ehrlichia chaffeensis, a bacterium that causes human monocytic ehrlichiosis.

Symptoms of this rare infectious disease include a fever, headaches, muscle aches, chills and fatigue, as indicated by The National Organization for Rare Disorders…
