MTA approves massive Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge project: Here’s what to know

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — On Wednesday, the board of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority approved a project that would expand the lifespan of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge.

The board of the transit agency voted unanimously in favor of a $249 million project, which would install a dehumidification system on the four main suspension cables of the bridge.

When asked if the system, which is currently in the works on the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge, could be installed without a full closure of the Verrazzano, a spokesperson from the MTA said the work is planned to have minimal traffic impacts…
