NYC launches 24/7 crackdown on open-air drug use in the South Bronx

THE BRONX, N.Y. (PIX11) – The Hub in the South Bronx, centered around East 149th Street and Third Avenue, has become ground zero in New York City’s fight against public drug use and homelessness. But this week, residents noticed a major shift.

Metal barricades now surround Roberto Clemente Plaza, and a mobile NYPD command center has taken up space in the middle of it. It’s part of a new 24/7 city operation that brings together police officers and sanitation crews in a sustained push to reclaim the area.

“We are not going to tolerate the drug use here,” said Deputy Mayor of Public Safety Kaz Daughtry, who joined other city officials on Thursday to announce the multi-agency initiative.
