Heastie promises assistance for 25,000 Queensites. Residents say it’s not enough.

Two state lawmakers announced much-needed assistance for a sprawling but ailing affordable housing complex in southeast Queens on Monday. But residents said the money will barely make a dent in the community’s financial woes.

The Rochdale Village co-op, which houses 25,000 people, has been dealing with an array of problems — a growing debt burden, rising insurance costs and much-needed maintenance — all of which will cause residents’ monthly payments to skyrocket. State Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie and Queens Assemblymember Vivian Cook announced $30 million in state assistance. However, some Rochdale Village residents said they’re frustrated by what they saw as a publicity stunt.

“It was just a repeat of stuff that everyone already knew,” said Tia Tyler, a Rochdale Village resident. “What I expected to hear was that they have a timeline as to when these monies would be received.”…
