Mayor Adams addresses statement about more ICE agents in sanctuary cities

UPPER EAST SIDE, Manhattan (PIX11) — Mayor Eric Adams is calling on federal lawmakers to stand up and make sure undocumented immigrants in New York City, who are not committing serious crimes, are protected from the ramped-up Immigration and Customs Enforcement action.

It comes after U.S. Border Czar Tom Homan said Monday, “We’re gonna flood the zone … So sanctuary cities get exactly what they don’t want, more agents in the community.”

In a one on one interview with PIX11’s Eileen Lehpamer, Mayor Adams said Tuesday “We’re communicating with HSI and finding out if that flooding action is to deal with those who are committing serious crimes and coordinating with the New York City police department, and other agencies to go after those dangerous people, then we want to do that coordination. If it’s to go after migrants, asylum seekers, undocumented people, it’s the wrong thing to do.”

Adams added, “We need to be clear, cities such as New York, Chicago, and Denver, and others, we don’t control Immigration Enforcement … this is a moment for our federal electeds to step up and define what the plans should be to make sure we’re not going after innocent New Yorkers.”…
