NYPD Arrests Two on 9th Avenue After Chain Snatch in Midtown Sparks Dramatic Pursuit

A dramatic police chase brought traffic to a standstill and stunned onlookers in Hell’s Kitchen on Tuesday evening, after NYPD officers apprehended two suspects on 9th Avenue near W50th Street following an attempted chain snatch just blocks away in Midtown.

According to NYPD, the incident began around 8:18pm at the corner of W54th Street and 7th Avenue, where three male suspects — two in black hoodies and one in a red hoodie — allegedly attempted to steal a necklace from a passerby. The suspects were reported to have fled southbound on Broadway on foot.

NYPD units responded swiftly, intercepting the suspects roughly 25 minutes later near W50th Street and 9th Avenue after a foot pursuit ended in a chaotic scene in the middle of the avenue as officers moved in.

Photos from the scene show one suspect being tackled to the ground near a police cruiser, with what appears to be a taser visible during the arrest. Another was handcuffed against the hood of an NYPD vehicle as dozens of onlookers gathered along the sidewalk and cyclists paused mid-ride.

Police said the victim was brought to the Hell’s Kitchen location shortly afterward to help identify the individuals involved…
