OZONE PARK, Queens (PIX11) – The New York City Sheriff’s Office is on a mission to get illegal ghost cars off the streets.
Over 20 deputies were on the lookout for vehicles that should not be on the road in Ozone Park early Monday morning. The Sheriff’s Office’s Ghost Car-Judgement Debt Operation goes after vehicles that have illegal license plates called “ghost tags” and those connected to unpaid fines, like traffic tickets or parking violations.

The consequences are often boots or towing. The Sheriff’s Office has a goal of netting 50 vehicles per borough during the operation.
Deputies use a combination of old-fashioned patrolling and license plate reading technology to spot vehicles. Any vehicles that go unclaimed will be sent to auction…
