NEW YORK (PIX11) – More than 5,300 ghost cars have been taken off New York City streets since a 16-member law enforcement task force began hunting for toll evaders in 2024, according to the MTA.
The task force held its 100th operation on the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge on Tuesday, looking for cars with obscured or fake license plates or those connected to unpaid tolls. Around 1,300 arrests have been made and 50,000 summonses issued since the start of the ghost plate operation.

Officials said in 2025 alone, over 1,800 vehicles whose owners owed $11.5 million in unpaid tolls and tickets were towed.
The ghost plate operation has also been held 11 times inside the congestion pricing zone, which is below 62nd Street in Manhattan. More than 97 cars have been towed, according to the MTA…
