A New York City man wounded by a Newark police officer last year has filed a civil lawsuit in federal court that accuses the police of using excessive force and violating his civil rights.
Giovani Oscar Valle-Castro, of Queens, New York, filed the suit Wednesday through his lawyer, David J. Altieri. In it, he says he suffered several injuries in the Aug. 12, 2024, shooting and is permanently paralyzed.
The suit cites 16 counts that also allege police assaulted Valle-Castro and were poorly trained and supervised. The suit says Valle-Castro, on Aug. 12, 2024, near Hawthorne Avenue, “climbed into a vehicle and attempted to drive away.”…
