Tragedy struck at the Morton Williams supermarket on 9th Avenue between W58th and W59th Streets late Friday night.
An employee who tried to stop a shoplifter was assaulted inside the store, according to a worker who spoke with W42ST by phone on Saturday. “He tried to stop someone from stealing, and there was a scuffle. He was taken to the hospital but he didn’t make it,” the worker who did not give their name said.
On Saturday morning, the store was shuttered with a sign on the door reading “Temporary Closed!! Sorry for the inconvenience”, and security staff turned away confused shoppers.
By the afternoon, the supermarket had quietly reopened, although NYPD officers remained on the scene continuing their investigation…
