Demonstrators call for end to ICE operations in New York City

NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) — Communities across the city came together Saturday to hold eight “Stand Against ICE” events, rallying against federal immigration enforcement.

Several events took place in neighborhoods with large immigrant populations in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens. In Sunset Park, demonstrators marched through the streets, holding signs and chanting, as they called for an end to ICE operations in New York City.

Assemblymember Marcela Mitaynes was among the 11 elected officials arrested last week after trying to gain access to the 10th floor of 26 Federal Plaza, where elected officials claim ICE has inhumanely and illegally detained thousands of immigrant New Yorkers. She’s working to pass legislation that bans local law enforcement from working with ICE.

“We don’t know what’s happening to them because they’re taken away so quickly and so there’s a lot of fear,” said Mitaynes. “People are afraid to go to work. People are afraid to send their children to school. People are afraid to be out and about.”…
