Manhattan Surgeon Dr. Maurizio Miglietta Indicted for First-Degree Rape After Allegedly Brandishing Firearm

Manhattan’s District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg, Jr. has announced the indictment of Dr. Maurizio Miglietta, a professor of surgery at Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine, on charges of rape in the first degree and attempted rape in the first degree. According to the Manhattan DA’s office, Miglietta, who claimed to be an Honorary Police Surgeon for the NYPD, allegedly assaulted a woman in his apartment after displaying a firearm.

The 56-year-old doctor is accused of using his professional standing as a lure to invite a 28-year-old woman to his Financial District apartment under the guise of discussing her business ventures. In the alleged encounter on June 5, court documents claim that Miglietta sexually assaulted the woman as she repeatedly said no, after showing her a firearm that he said was loaded. Displayed the firearm, Miglietta then proceeded to commit the assault.

Assistant D.A. Candace White, under the supervision of higher-ranking officials in the Special Victims Division, is handling the case. They have been working closely with the NYPD’s Manhattan Special Victims Squad, with Det. Lauren Liebhauser receiving specific acknowledgment for her efforts. “This investigation is ongoing,” DA Bragg stated in a press release, urging “if you have any information about similar assaults, please call our Special Victims Division.”…
