A New York City mother is being credited with protecting her young daughter during a terrifying incident at their Bronx apartment that left both victims requiring medical treatment. Karizma Dabney, 31, desperately sought help from neighbors after the violent encounter on Wednesday night at the family’s East 173rd Street residence.
Dabney, a model, frantically knocked on a neighbor’s door seeking assistance after both she and her 12-year-old daughter were injured during the incident. The neighbor, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described hearing urgent cries for help that prompted an immediate call to police.
A mother’s desperate plea
According to the neighbor’s account, Dabney was seeking help primarily for her daughter when she reached the nearby apartment. Police arrived quickly at the scene but initially encountered difficulty accessing the family’s apartment due to security locks on the door. Officers repeatedly requested entry before the door was eventually opened.
The neighbor recalled that once emergency responders had secured the scene, Dabney expressed regret about allowing the visit that led to the violent incident. Both mother and daughter required medical attention following the attack, with the young girl being transported to Cohen’s Children’s Medical Center in Queens where she underwent surgery. Her current condition has not been made public.
Suspect faces serious charges
Joshua Burnside, 28, who sources identified as the girl’s stepfather, was arrested and charged with multiple offenses including assault, acting in a manner injurious to a child and weapons possession.
