In a striking and troubling case, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg, Jr. recently revealed the indictment of 39-year-old Domingo Vasquez Rodriguez. Rodriguez is accused of the gunpoint burglary and assault of his elderly former landlord, Jose Antonio Tur, who was 99 years old. The distressing event, which involved Rodriguez allegedly robbing Tur of $20,000, occurred in September of this year, as detailed by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office.
“As alleged, Domingo Vasquez Rodriguez callously assaulted and then robbed 99-year-old Jose Antonio Tur at gunpoint before fleeing with his cash,” said District Attorney Bragg in a statement. The robbery led to tragic consequences; Mr. Tur suffered a stroke following the incident and later passed away. Rodriguez, who was Mr. Tur’s tenant and owed over $30,000 in late rent payments, had previously been offered $8,000 by Mr. Tur to leave an apartment in a West 187th Street building, according to the indictment provided by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office.
On September 22, Rodriguez reportedly made a deceptive phone call to Mr. Tur, claiming he had a package for delivery, which led to the confrontation at the basement gate of the apartment building. The encounter resulted in physical harm to Mr. Tur, including a laceration and a broken finger, before Rodriguez allegedly brandished a firearm, coercing Mr. Tur to his office where the money was stolen.
