On October 28, 2025, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg Jr. announced the indictment of Anthony Pittman. Pittman, 35, is accused of using a stolen identity to rent a luxury apartment in the Murray Hill area of Manhattan. Prosecutors allege that Pittman submitted forged documents, including tax records and financial statements, when applying for the apartment in May 2024. He then provided forged checks totaling $9,660 for the security deposit and first month’s rent.
The indictment states that Pittman later sublet the apartment to another person under false pretenses. The subtenant was required to leave after building management discovered the fraud. Pittman is accused of taking the rent payments and leaving. He faces charges of Identity Theft in the First Degree and three counts of Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument in the Second Degree in New York State Supreme Court.
District Attorney Bragg noted that the investigation is ongoing and asked potential victims to contact the Housing & Tenant Protection Unit.
