NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) — As the sunset date for the MetroCard nears, the MTA is trying to help commuters get ready for tap-and-go by giving away free OMNY cards for a limited time.
Free OMNY cards will be given out at select hub subway stations in the five boroughs on Tuesday, beginning at 8 a.m. The first 400 people to transfer their MetroCard balances to an OMNY card at the Customer Service Centers in the stations will have the card fee waived.

“As we prepare to say goodbye to the MetroCard, we want to make sure customers are aware of all the resources available at our growing number of Customer Service Centers across the subway system,” said MTA Chief Customer Officer Shanifah Rieara.
The OMNY tap-and-go system is expected to replace the 30-year MetroCard swipe system in 2026, with the final date for MetroCard sales set for Dec. 31, 2025.
