Vann entered Lincoln Hospital in September for treatment of a liver condition. Overnight, doctors told her family she was undergoing emergency surgery but did not explain why. Relatives later learned she had been beaten while asleep. Her roommate allegedly attacked her, causing a brain bleed. The medical examiner ruled her death a homicide caused by blunt force trauma.
