Health Officials Urge Local Residents to Check Measles Vaccination Status Amid Rising Cases

The New York State Department of Health has reminded residents to check that they are up to date with measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccinations. This follows an increase in measles cases in the state, many linked to international travel and local exposure. As of December 1, 2025, there have been 35 confirmed measles cases in New York. Nineteen cases are in New York City, and 16 are in other regions, with a cluster reported in the lower Hudson Valley since October.

State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald stated that vaccination is important to prevent measles. He said the MMR vaccine is the most effective way to protect individuals and communities. The Department is working with county health departments and local partners to monitor and investigate cases. Measures include contact tracing to limit further spread.

The Department advises all residents, especially those planning international travel, to check their immunization records. Infants aged 6 to 11 months can receive an early MMR dose before traveling abroad and should follow the recommended schedule after returning.
