New York fights to save huge 1950s ocean ship before it sinks into watery grave

U.S. state and city officials are currently fighting for the ownership of a historic ship.

New York City lawmakers are trying to seize control of the SS United States, a historic 1950s-era ocean liner, from officials in Okaloosa County, Florida, who purchased the ship for $1 million last year. Florida officials intend to submerge the ship, which was once a high-end cruiser that took trips from New York to Europe, about 180 feet underwater off the Gulf of Mexico to create an “artificial reef” for divers, where nearly a dozen other shipwrecks reside.

“Okaloosa County is the owner of the ship,” an Okaloosa County representative said. “We fully intend to deploy the SS United States as the World’s Largest Artificial Reef.”…
