NYPD settlement allows 30 officers who failed background checks to stay on force

Dozens of rookie and probationary police officers will stay on the job after the NYPD settled a legal challenge from the Police Benevolent Association.

The NYPD told 30 officers to retire or be fired after discovering they had failed psychological exams or background checks but had somehow made it on the force through hiring errors.

“I’m appreciative that we have found a path forward for these officers to protect and serve our city. as the NYPD closes the single highest hiring year on record, the department remains laser focused on continuing to drive crime down and delivering on historic public safety gains,” NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said in a statement…
