Prosecutor: Union City man charged with badly injuring pedestrian Feb. in hit-and-run

A Union City man has been charged with badly injuring a pedestrian in a hit-and-run back in February, Acting Hudson County Prosecutor Wayne Mello announced.

Carlos Mejia, 56, of Union City, is charged with aggravated assault, knowingly leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash resulting in serious bodily injury, endangering an injured victim, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon (vehicle), aggravated assault (domestic violence), assault by auto, and obstruction, Mello said in a statement.

He was arrested at the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office in Secaucus on Tuesday, December 23rd and transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility pending his first court appearance.

Shortly after 9 p.m. on Saturday, February 22nd, the Union City Police Department was notified of a pedestrian struck on 17th Street in the area of Bergenline Avenue. Responding officers located a female victim — later identified as a 32-year-old Union City resident — with serious injuries…
