NJ condo uses dog DNA to track owners who don’t pick up after their pets

A condominium community in Edgewater is taking a new approach to enforcing pet waste rules — using DNA to track down owners who fail to clean up after their dogs.

At Hudson Harbour, property management has launched a program requiring dog owners to register their pets by submitting a free one-time check swab DNA sample. The genetic information is stored in a database with Pooprints, a part of BioPet Laboratories.

If dog waste is found on common property and not cleaned up, management collects a sample and sends it to a laboratory for testing. The DNA is then compared against registered samples to identify the dog responsible…
