Major Deegan Horror: Man Walking Through Van Cortlandt Park Struck and Killed

A 30-year-old man was killed Wednesday afternoon after a vehicle struck him while he was walking on the Major Deegan Expressway through Van Cortlandt Park, according to police. The collision happened just after 1:30 p.m. near West 233rd Street when, authorities said, he was hit by a 2011 Jeep. Emergency Medical Services took the man to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police identified the driver as a 42-year-old man who remained at the scene, and said the victim “suffered severe trauma throughout his body,” according to News 12 The Bronx. The NYPD has not released the victim’s name as investigators continue to process the scene.

Where the crash happened

The Major Deegan cuts Van Cortlandt Park in two, carrying highway traffic past ballfields and walking trails. The crash site sits near the West 233rd Street exit. Local groups have pushed for a pedestrian bridge in that area for years, but the long-planned crossing was canceled amid rising cost concerns, as reported by Gothamist.

City data on highway crashes

NYC DOT’s Serious Injury Response, Tracking & Analysis (SIRTA) report shows highways make up about 8.5% of serious crash locations citywide, while pedestrian-involved sites account for roughly 39% of serious-injury locations. The report also notes that NYC DOT teams and the NYPD visit every fatal crash location to review site conditions and recommend safety changes. NYC DOT provides the agency’s latest findings in the SIRTA report.
