A New York corrections officer admits she used forged military papers to steal $80,000 in leave pay

A New York City corrections officer admitted in federal court Thursday to using forged military documents to fraudulently collect more than $80,000 in leave pay she did not earn.

Leah Mathieu, 34, of Freeport (Long Island), pleaded guilty to wire fraud before U.S. District Judge Naomi Reice Buchwald. The scheme ran from December 2022 through March 2024, according to court documents.

Mathieu works as a corrections officer for the New York City Department of Correction and serves in both the U.S. Navy Reserve and New York Naval Militia. She repeatedly submitted fake military orders to her employer, claiming she was on state active duty with the Naval Militia, entitling her to paid leave from her corrections officer position…
