NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani Makes Bold Move by Skipping 2026 Met Gala

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and his wife, Rama Duwaji, have opted to skip this year’s Met Gala, despite receiving invitations to the exclusive event.

Traditionally, the city’s mayor is invited to the annual gala hosted by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, a star-studded affair known for its high fashion and influential attendees. However, sources close to Mamdani revealed that the 34-year-old mayor will not be attending the May 4 event.

One insider told Page Six, “He’s not coming. And it would be foolish if he did … can you imagine?

It goes against everything he believes in.” The gala this year is notably supported by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his wife, Lauren Sánchez-Bezos, who serve as lead donors and honorary co-chairs.

Previous mayors have often embraced the event. For example, Eric Adams attended in 2022 wearing a custom jacket that highlighted New York City themes and advocated for ending gun violence. Mamdani’s decision marks a clear departure from this tradition.

Public relations expert Chad Teixeira offered insight into the mayor’s choice, describing it as a deliberate and principled stance. Speaking to the Irish Star, Teixeira said, “Mamdani knows exactly what the Met Gala represents and he’s choosing not to be part of that world because it doesn’t sit comfortably with his politics.” He added that such consistency is uncommon and can enhance public trust, signaling that Mamdani is disciplined and clear about his values, rather than swayed by the allure of celebrity.

Teixeira also noted that Mamdani’s decision will likely resonate with younger, progressive audiences who tend to view events like the Met Gala with skepticism. However, he acknowledged there could be downsides: “It risks looking dismissive of one of New York’s biggest cultural moments, especially when previous mayors have embraced it as part of their role.”

The PR expert also pointed out potential consequences for Mamdani’s political and social capital. While skipping the gala might be seen as a snub in fashion and media circles-venues packed with influential figures-it could politically strengthen him by demonstrating his unwillingness to conform to expectations.

“He’s opting out of a very influential room,” Teixeira said, “and that’s a trade-off he’s clearly comfortable making. Whether it was the right call may take time to reveal.”

In sum, Mayor Mamdani’s absence from the Met Gala highlights a firm stance on principle over prestige, reflecting his distinct approach to leadership and public engagement.
