From beloved neighborhood institutions to waterfront landmarks and acclaimed dining destinations, a number of restaurants across North Jersey and the New York metropolitan area have announced closures in recent weeks, highlighting the ongoing challenges facing the hospitality industry.
The latest closures span a wide range of establishments, from family-owned specialty shops that have served communities for decades to restaurants that built reputations as regional dining destinations.
Mr. Pasta in North Arlington
In North Arlington, Mr. Pasta announced it will close June 20 after 52 years in business. The family-owned Italian specialty store said the decision came after “much thought and consideration,” ending a run that made it a fixture for generations of Bergen County residents seeking fresh pasta and Italian specialties.
MEAL in Nutley
Meanwhile, Nutley restaurant and nightlife venue MEAL permanently closed in May after 15 years. In a farewell message to customers, the business thanked patrons and staff for years of support, describing the restaurant as a place built on “love, laughter, and community.”
Chart House in Weehawken
The region has also lost one of its most recognizable waterfront dining destinations. Chart House in Weehawken permanently closed May 14, ending decades of service along the Hudson River waterfront. Known for panoramic views of the Manhattan skyline, seafood dishes and event spaces, the restaurant had long been a popular location for weddings, anniversaries and other special occasions.
Zendiggi in Closter
In Closter, Zendiggi Kebab House will served its final customers last weekend, after 15 years in business. Owner Keivan Tayab said in a video message that a lease dispute with the restaurant’s landlord ultimately led to the closure after efforts to negotiate a renewal failed.
Village Green in Ridgewood
Village Green in Ridgewood closed June 6. A message on the Village Green website attributed the move to the building’s recent sale to a new landlord. Restaurant ownership was unable to reach a new agreement at the property, resulting in the closure.
The closures extend beyond New Jersey.
Craft restaurant in New York City
In Manhattan, celebrity chef Tom Colicchio recently announced that Craft, his flagship restaurant and one of New York City’s most influential fine dining establishments, will close June 27 after 25 years in operation…
