Major power line abruptly shut off, depriving New York of desperately needed power

ALBANY — The newly built power line connecting hydropower from Quebec to New York went down this week, leaving the state without a major source of electricity as a brutal heat wave expands over the East Coast.

The 339-mile, $6 billion Champlain Hudson Power Express transmission line is designed to provide New York City with roughly 20% of its power needs when fully operational.

“Hydro Quebec experienced a technical issue early this morning at the Hertel Converter station on the Quebec side of the border,” said Peter Rose, a spokesman for Hydro-Quebec Energy Services U.S. “Crews have been on site working to resolve this issue as quickly as possible and based on our most recent assessment, we are hoping for resolution by this evening.
